In
Germany Weissburgunder is what we know as Pinot Blanc. Auxerrois, well that’s
another matter altogether. More common in the Alsace region of France, it is
almost always blended with Pinot Blanc as it is here in the Nahe region of
Germany. The sheer talent of father and daughter duo Rebecca and Peter Crusius
(Rebecca is the 13th generation in this wine family) have created an
incredibly expressive white wine. Fermented as separate lots then blended
together this allows both grapes to express their individual identity as part
of a uniform whole. Bright, dry, and demonstrative it’s packed with stone
fruits, white peach, amber, red delicious apple, apricot and slight back notes
of hay and wet stones, held together by a comprehensive acidity. As one German
Sommelier commented to me, “it’s a quaffing drink for wine lovers.” For the
quality of this bright clean wine, it is well under priced. This is not a common
wine in Germany and the caveat is that you can only find this here. It shows
that there is indeed a world of grapes uncommon to most of us and therefore
travel and the desire to always drink local will serve us well.
