Wine Each Week – 2016 Chalk Hill Estate Red

Chalk Hill Winery is located in the Chalk Hill AVA, situated between the cooler Russian River Valley and the warmer Alexander Valley, giving this winery a breadth of grape growing opportunities. Their ’16 Red shows this well. Supple and nearly velvety in texture, this wine is smooth and quiet in nature. Comprised of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Malbec, and smaller portions of Petite Verdot and Merlot, it offers subtle black cherry, red raspberry, plum, blackberry with side notes of herbal grasses, light tobacco, and mocha. The oak aging of 20 months in all French oak (55% was new) makes the wood apparent, but supportive and properly balanced. Part of that is due to the stainless steel fermentation and not barrel. Bottled in June 2018 this drinks quite well now, but will also drink well over the next decade.
