Is it the height of vanity?
Or just a pointed reason to buy a new Champagne glass? From the “You Can’t Make
This Stuff Up” department – according to The Drinks Business: “Taking Marie
Antoinette as her inspiration, whose left breast was said to have served as the
model for the first Champagne coupe (glass) in the late-18th century, British
artist Jane McAdam Freud crafted the coupe from a mold of Moss’s left breast.”
Okay first of all, her name is Freud? Really? Is it just me or does someone
need to get something off their chest?
Second: I
realize this is a marketing ploy, hatched by restaurateur Richard Caring in
England and Dom Perignon to sell food and booze. Caring owns restaurants 34, The
Ivy, Daphne’s, and Scott’s. Dom Perignon was a Benedictine monk and it would be
intriguing to see the him suck Champagne from a woman’s breast - Moss ain’t no
Virgin Mary, but I’m certain lots of people would like a tipple at this nipple.
“I was excited to participate
in this project – what an honour to be alongside Marie Antoinette, she was a
very intriguing and mischievous character,” Moss was quoted as telling The
Drinks Business.

Okay, third: Born in 1755, Marie Antoinette married French king Louis XVI
and the couple came to symbolize all of the excesses of the reviled French
monarchy - she had a model farm built on the palace grounds so that she and her
ladies-in-waiting could dress up in elaborate costumes and pretend to be
milkmaids and shepherdesses (that’s another booze fueled fantasy for a later
time). She ended up kneeling before the guillotine on October 16, 1793 –
hooters and all. Hum – I’m not perceiving that as mischievous. Now a
penis-shaped beer glass, that’s mischievous!
